New Copyediting Rate Effective July 1, 2023. All Other Rates Effective January 1, 2022.

Copyediting.
Accurate and consistent spelling, punctuation, grammar, and style; word choice, phrasing, and clarity suggestions; basic fact-checking, primarily to avoid anachronisms; inconsistencies in characterization, storyline, or timeline may also be noted. $12.00 per 1,000 words.
Proofreading.
Accurate and consistent spelling, punctuation, grammar, and style.
(This is pre-publication quality control and is the final step to catch any lingering grammatical or typographical errors. Please ensure your manuscript has been edited first.) $6.00 per 1,000 words.
Manuscript Critique (Expert Beta Reading). Detailed, thoughtful feedback on your story, including plausibility, readability, and any noticeable plot holes or anachronisms. Includes running commentary throughout your manuscript with specific reactions and clarifying questions, as well as a 3-6 page Beta Reading Report, summarizing feedback. 80,000 words maximum. (This is not the same as developmental or structural editing and will only provide feedback from a professional reader's perspective. Errors, such as those found in a formal copyediting or proofreading review, will not be identified or corrected.) $4.00 per 1,000 words.

Please note that all rates and estimates are quoted in US dollars.
For simplicity, I charge a per-word rate that is expressed in dollars per 1,000 words. Please see my blog post for more information about per-word rates vs. hourly rates.
Please read my blog post, Editing is an Art, for guidance about choosing a professional editor. Also review the Professional Editorial Standards defined by the Editors Canada organization.

Process

I edit, proofread, and critique Microsoft® Word documents using the Track Changes feature. This allows you to accept or reject each of my edits at your discretion. The benefit of this feature is that my revisions can automatically be implemented into your original document. Upon request, I will proofread or critique PDF documents, although you will need to manually apply any suggested revisions to your original document.

I follow the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) for editing, and I use Merriam-Webster’s dictionary for reference. I am also familiar with UK spelling and grammar conventions, and I will gladly accommodate requests for other style guides and dictionaries. Please notify me of your request on the Client Preferences survey located on the Contact page.

Turnaround time depends on the size and complexity of your project and will be included in my initial estimate. For projects lasting longer than two weeks, I will periodically send you an update on my progress as I work through your manuscript.

For no extra charge, I may create a style sheet for your copyediting project, if one is not provided to me, and include it with my final submission to you. A style sheet identifies your writing preferences and allows for maximum efficiency and consistency, as well as continuity for future projects.

I appreciate the trust you place in me and will maintain the confidentiality of your document. Please see my Privacy Policy for more information.
